Should Your Business Be At Home Or Outside The Home

There are many things to consider when you decide to go into business for yourself. One of the important decisions is where you should conduct your business, at home or at a location outside of your home.

If distractions can get you off track easily, you probably should not conduct the majority of your business at home unless you can have one room in your home that is strictly for work and your home life is kept out of that area. For most people this is a good solution because getting a place to work outside the home often means added expenses which can be hard for a fledling business.

In some cases, it is harder to have a business at home. Perhaps if you live in a small flat or counsel housing, you may not be able to conduct a business which would demand a steady flow of traffic to your place. Even in strict condominium areas there may be rules in place forbidding homeowners from conducting business that require traffic in that area.

Also another factor which may keep you from working out of your home may be legal zoning laws. Certain businesses just cannot be started in your home like pubs, restaurants, clubs, retail business, car sales and so forth.

If you are expecting people to actually come to you to do business with you, your decision as to whether having it at home or elsewhere depends on how big your home is and if your area can handle the traffic flow. If you cannot deal with either issue, then it is time to look for a space elsewhere.

Businesses such as direct sales, e-commerce, writing and so forth a perfect for someone at home because they do not really require a traffic flow to your place. However, if distraction gets in the way, consider renting an inexpensive office space in a building.

If you choose to do business at home, make sure it will not conflict with local regulations. Make sure if a licence is needed you can get it. Also consult with your neighbors if your business may add to traffic flow or noise because they can always protest it and shut you down.

At home businesses should have their own space, even if it is confined to one room in the home. Having a television or radio on is fine as long as it does not keep you away from your work. Make sure you have all your equipment you need handy in the room. Keep a filing system organised so you can find required documents as needed. Make a list supply of all the things you need so you can make sure you always have those things on hand. If you do not have your own computer, I would strongly recommend you get one for your business as it is great to help you organsie and makes it easier to communicate with your customers.

If you are at home and your home life is urgently needing your attention, leave the room and tend to it. Make it a point that when you are in that area it is for work only. This will fend off the temptation to sit there and become distracted by other things.

If you decide on going outside the home, finding a space can be a daunting task. You must know exactly what kind of space you need whether it will be industrial, office, retail, or dining. You also must know the size of your potential audience because due to fire laws a space has to be big enough to safely accomodate them on your busiest days. Make sure it will comply with all safety standards, especially if an evacuation is needed.

Also make sure of the amenities of the space. Will it have access to restrooms, cooking facilities, electricity sources and so forth? The bottom line is if this space will accomodate your particular business.

If you are not expecting a large crowd and just need a cubicle size space to work, you could probably get away with renting a cheap spot in an office building or sharing an office room with others while splitting the rent.

If you need larger spaces, it will cost you more money. You may opt to purchase a building or just rent it. Either way, you will be required to keep insurance just for having the building itself, even without having a business running.

A bonus of buying a building is if there is any extra space you can lease out that area for extra income. If you don't have the money upfront, you will have to get a mortgage loan to buy the building. One example where this can work out for some is if someone bought a building that has a shop on the main floor and tenant space above where either your family can move in or you could rent to someone else. If you rented the upstairs space, it would help you make payments on the mortgage.

Always shop around to find the best price. Feel free to negotiate the terms and get everything in writing. Read the fine print because you may sign a contract not realising that if your business fails you may be obligated for the rest of the rent for the contract term.

Another alternative for those in sales is to look for big events where they allow for booth rentals. Rent out a booth where you will find a high traffic flow. This will allow you the opportunity to draw more traffic to your usual business location when a wider audience has discovered you.
