What You Should Know About The Family Business
If you thought about having your own business as a way to get close to your family, you may have thought about making it the family business. It is a good idea if every member in the family is as excited about it as you are. You may have everyone agree that it sounds good in the beginning, but as time goes on they may find they dislike it and are not as helpful as you wish they could be. Then you would find yourself on your own.
Consider the overall skills, talents and tastes of your family when thinking of a family business. What have they shown an interest in before the idea of the business? What common interest does your family find fun? What would be a motivating factor to get this business to become a success? Remember, money in itself may be a motivating factor in the beginning, but if the work is disagreeable the money will not matter.
When you involve the whole family, it is even more essential that you have a financial and business plan in order. If necessary, one of the family members could be more supportive by having a steady paycheck by working for someone else. You may have to cut corners when starting the business, just make sure everyone has some input when it comes to making cuts. That will lead to lesser feelings of deprivation and resentment.
If some of your family members are children, let them enjoy their childhood. Allow them time to play, be with friends, and just be kids. They still have to worry about the usual things such as schoolwork, but to them the business cannot be first place in their lives. Make them feel important by having a small, but manageable role in your new business and pay them for the work. As they get older, they may want to pursue it further. If you put too much responsibility on them, they will grow to resent it.
Always make time to be a family outside of the business. One of the perks of being a business owner is setting your own hours. Perhaps you may want to close business on Saturday and Sunday or just one of those days. You may even want to close one week a month. However you work it out, just make sure your time off is for your family. Only tend to work matters when an urgent situation occurs, otherwise leave it alone. Anyone can start a new business from scratch, but your family is the only one you have.
When people spend a lot of time together, feelings can run amok. You need to stay professional in your business, but family problems can make that hard. Explore different avenues of communication to learn how to speak with your family members respectfully and without raised voices. Control emotional outbursts in a business setting and deter to talk about problems at a later time. Being in business as a family can be very stressful which is why it is crucial to learn how to release the stress without inflicting pain on others who may be equally stressed.
A family business can be quite profitable, but there are times when the business can be a total failure. If this happens in your venture, be there to support each other. The transition to a so-called normal life may be hard once you had a taste of independence. You may even consider doing another business in the future if you learned lessons on why you failed. Just remember, a failure is not the end of the world. The majority of attempted businesses fail within the first 2 years. If you made it longer than 2 years, consider it a success.
