If you want to make money on the Internet, YOU NEED A COMPUTER!! Duh! Of course Mr Lapre will make it sound like you do not need a computer to run your online business as he has a staff who will do all the work for you. If his staff wants to go through the process of running a business, don't you think they would have their hands full running one for themselves instead of for a few hundred people? I run seven web sites and it takes almost all my waking time to do it.
You need a computer or how else are you going to make sure your site is live? How on earth will you make sure your site is being submitted to search engines? Will you actually take someone else' word that they have indeed put up a site for you and submitted it?
Buying a computer does not have to break your budget. There are very reliable standard systems you could use solely for the purpose of starting your online business for under $500. Some places even offer payment plans for those with acceptable credit. If you don't have great credit, save up the money or at least enough to come up with a deposit and see if a lender will give you the rest of the money.
To start your own online business, all you need is at least a minimal hard drive as low as 60GB, a memory of 256MB, a 56k modem, with a screen, keyboard and mouse. Everything else is icing on the cake. A very basic model will not be ideal for those gaming and want to do heavy graphics, watch movies, or download large files. It is only for those who do not have a lot of money to spend and want a foot in the door by getting a starter system.
The Hard Drive
This is the component in the system that stores your files. The bigger the number, the more files it can store.
The Memory
This is the part that gives you the ability to actively use the programs on your hard drive or the ones to which you are connected. The more memory available, the more programs you can run at the same time.
The Modem
This connects you to the online world.
There is the old standard modem which connects you via the telephone. The drawback is you cannot use a phone when you are online and it takes forever to get connected and is easy to become disconnected.
A DSL connection is faster and is normally installed by a phone company. It is expensive, but usually not as expensive as a cable connection which is even faster.
The Processor (CPU)
This is the brains of your computer. It organizes all the programs running your system and directs the traffic. Most computers have some form of Intel chip, but there are many other choices. Pentium chips can be quite expensive, especially the P4. An AMD or Celeron work well and are quite reasonably priced.
The Periphial Items
These are your attachments such as a printer, speakers, screen, keyboard, mouse and other items along the line. They plug into your computer and serve as either Output or Input depending on if they give your information or are used for you to put information into the system.
The more periphial items you attach, the more power your computer will need to run them. Keep that in mind when choosing your system and look for the power source details.
Not all periphials are compatible with all systems. Be sure to read the documentation before you buy them and make sure they come with "drivers" which help it to function. Without a driver, it is useless.
