The Importance Of Drinking Water
The water in an average adult's body could fill a 12 gallon container. Water is absolutely necessary for life. The cells in the human body are composed of more than 75% water. Without it, none of them could function. Most people don't drink enough although you get about 4 cups daily of water from the foods you eat. This is not enough and should be added by drinking water. Most adults should drink between 8 and 10 cups (8 fl oz per cup) of ordinary water each day.
Ideally, one should drink just plain water to make up for your daily losses, but that is not an option for many people, especially in third world countries. As long as you drink fluid in some form or extra fruit to make up the difference, your body will use it. Pure water flushes through your body faster and releases toxins, but other sources will do the job, just not as efficiently.
A person could go without food for a few months, but would die within a few days without water. Those involved in extremely vigorous exercise or physical routines or who are suffering from extreme diarrhea or vomiting, or living in extreme heat must replenish the resources which are drained much faster in these conditions. If you are physically active, live in a hot climate, or have an illness that produces vomiting or diarrhea, you may need to drink more than 10 cups of water daily.
Even too much water can be a dangerous thing as it can elevate your blood pressure and create havoc with your circulatory system, but one would have to drink an awful lot before that were to happen.
Water has several vital functions in the body. It delivers to each cell the nutrients needed to carry on the processes of life, dissolves vitamins, minerals, amino acids, glucose and other nutrients, provides a medium for chemical reactions, is involved in the production of energy, lubricates joints, acts as a shock absorber inside eyes, spinal cord and joints, helps the body flush out waste materials and maintains the body's temperature.
In the United States and Canada in the major cities, water supplies are regulated to bring the most safe product to homes in the area. It would be virtually impossible to find a 100% pure water in the natural state and the processed plant water is usually as good as it can get. Despite all effort made to produce a quality product, sometimes unwanted chemicals can slip in from time to time. Bottled water can even produce the same set of problems.
Many people still use well water in conjunction to a septic system. So many others live in areas where water is completely unsafe. Many people have become accustomed to this situation and are better able to handle the water than a stranger to that area. The fact is, even with water that is less than perfect, it is better than no water at all - even if you must boil it before you use it.
The greatest problem with impure water is disease which is more common in third world countries. Insects such as mosquitoes breed in large numbers in these bodies of water and can carry disease such as malaria. Impure water can also contribute to a number of illnesses that would cause one to vomit or have a frequent case of diarrhea. Unfortunately, the majority of the world has not much of a choice when it comes to water and have to settle for what they can get. In the United States, we take it for granted that we CAN be picky about our water.
Water filters and conditioner systems for use in the home can make your water taste better as it screens out even more of the impurities that slip by. Metals and chemicals used by local water companies can contribute a certain taste that is not to the liking of everyone. By having that extra filter or conditioning on your water, you can eliminate some of that taste. If you eliminate that taste, you just might find yourself drinking more water which will help your health in the long run.
The obvious benefit to drinking more plain water is it will fill your stomach in between meals. Instead of eating a salty, fatty snack, drink two cold glasses of water and your craving for the snack will disappear with 0 calories added to your diet. Drink water in between bites of your meal and you may find you eat less which can be a better diet than extreme fad dieting. Drinking water has also been known to clear up some skin conditions by flushing out the toxins. In conjunction with exercise, drinking extra water can help flush out those hard pockets of fat. And overall, drinking more water will help you feel better.
