Books From The 1990s - We CAN Handle The Truth

What do you do after watching a sports hero on television riding in a truck to escape the law only to have a court case drag on for years in the public eye? Try reading the biographies or autobiographies of those behind the scene, or maybe a bio on someone who was connected with Watergate. Tough love and getting back to your senses are very popular.

The 90s reading material was still more of the themes appealing to the Baby Boomers. Self-improvement has always been a hot topic over the last half of the 1900s. The 90s seemed to incorporate these topics with a new age angle. The mood of these books went from pampering the poor victim to blaming the victim for getting into the mess in the first place.

The two most controversial books of this decade were "Final Exit," by Derek Humphry and "Sex" by Madonna.

"Final Exit had a lot of heat because our society has a hard enough time in dealing with issues of death, let alone promoting suicide. The critics feared we have become a society where people are easily disposable from before the cradle to one foot in the grave. Others applauded the book as they felt it was about time someone gave a kind option to those who were going to die anyway to let them do it with dignity.

"Sex" was controversial over the explicit nature of the subject and the graphic pictures. It was sold much like stores sold Adult XXX magazines - in a wrapper and not sold to minors. Many felt this book crossed the line of taste. Others felt it was a work of art.

The usual gang of authors were very much present in the 1990s. The prolific writers such as Stephen King, Sidney Sheldon, Danielle Steel, Anne Rice, Mary Higgins Clark, James A Michener, Tom Clancy, and Robert Ludlum had more than their fair share of best sellers. They have been criticized by some as churning out formula novels without much substance or imagination. If that were true, they wouldn't have much of a following for very long.

Favorite personalities also took up the niche and produced a best seller. Bill Cosby, America's favorite dad, wrote "Childhood" and other comedians such as Paul Reiser, Jerry Seinfeld, Roseanne Barr, and Ellen DeGeneres made the cut.
