Christmas is celebrated in many parts of the world. Some of the customs are exactly the same while other customs are unique to certain parts of the world.
Many people celebrate the Christmas holiday season whether they believe in Christ or belong to a Christian religion. Others refuse to celebrate it because they are Christian or do not believe in Christ.
Even the date of the Christmas holiday season is not the same everywhere in the world. Most people in the Western countries celebrate it on December 25th while others may celebrate it January 7th.
The word Christmas is a contraction of Christ's Mass, derived from the Old English Cristes męsse. It is often abbreviated Xmas, probably because X resembles the Greek letter "chi" which has often historically been used as an abbreviation for Christ.
