Starting a business at home seems to be the rage. Infomercials, e-mails, direct mail, and print ads all tell stories of how many people are leaving the treadmill of working a 9-5 job just so they can be home with their families. To boot, these stories tell how they make even more money than they ever did working for someone else and they feel more secure. But what are the facts and is this a realistic option for you?

There are many people who do make money working businesses at home, some of them are making a great deal of money more than they ever would working for someone else. However, these are also the go-getting types who are highly organized and motivated and skilled in what they are doing. This does not apply to the vast majority who plan on making a-go of this who will start something part time on the side or full time, but realize they are losing money or barely making even and spend a lot more time than they are willing to devote in this pursuit.

A home based business is not for everyone. Take this test to see if this is an option you should consider:

  1. Do you have a skill that someone would reasonable pay you for your services?
  2. Can you sell?
  3. Are you highly committed to working at your goals?
  4. Are you organized?
  5. Are you easily distracted?
  6. Do you have money saved that equals 6 or more months of your monthly expenses?
  7. Are you shy?
  8. Do you hate to sell?
  9. Do you have a room available in your home without distractions to keep you from working?
  10. Can you stick to a schedule?
  11. Can you motivate yourself?
  12. Can you stick to a budget?
  13. Do you know the laws in your area pertaining to doing business?
  14. Do you know what you want to do to earn a living?
  15. Do you have a business plan?
  16. Do you have the funds to start your business?

Now, add up your score:

  1. YES - 5 NO - 1
  2. YES - 5 NO - 1
  3. YES - 5 NO - 1
  4. YES - 5 NO - 1
  5. NO - 1 YES - 5
  6. YES - 5 NO - 1
  7. NO - 1 YES - 5
  8. NO - 1 YES - 5
  9. YES - 5 NO - 1
  10. YES - 5 NO - 1
  11. YES - 5 NO - 1
  12. YES - 5 NO - 1
  13. YES - 5 NO - 1
  14. YES - 5 NO - 1
  15. YES - 5 NO - 1
  16. YES - 5 NO - 1

Analysis of your scores:

16 - 32 - You do not have what it takes to make a successful venture in the home business world. There are certain things you could probably change to increase your odds of making it, but there would have to be a major change which may conflict with your personalities or abilities that may not be possible at this time. To consider a home business, even on a part time basis, could end up being financially risky to you. There is no shame in working for others!

36 - 60 - Anyone who is motivated enough can overcome any hurdle when it comes to the home based business, but you may not be ready to face them. Try learning more about running a business first, saving up enough money, and going to the Small Business Administration in your area for help before you do it. You may even want to consider something part time while you keep your day job to get a taste of what you will be in for. Your odds for making it at this point are about 50/50. At best, expect to break even.

64 - 80 - You are most likely in a position to succeed. You are motivated for success and will do what it takes while you are in a financially sound situation to devote your efforts into a business instead of worrying all the time about when profits will kick in. Be sure to have your business plan and budget handy before you take off. Your chances for success are 80%!

If you had a low score, take heart, this does not mean you are of less value as a worker than a person with a high score. It is a lot of work when it comes to making your home business a success rather than a lark. Just because your score is low does not mean you are ruled out from ever having a home business if you are willing to work hard at overcoming your shortcomings.

Actually, you ARE more secure working for someone else than in your own home business - no matter what they tell you in the ads trying to sell you their product. If you make yourself a valuable team player and go above and beyond the call of duty at work and learn all you can about the business, your employer would be a fool to let you go. When you work for someone else, you have the security in expecting a check for the work you have done. When you are self-employed, there can be many days in the start up phase where you are working hard with no money to show for it.

The only types of workers who are NOT secure in their jobs are the ones with a poor attitude towards work. These are the ones that do just the bare minimum tasks expected and only do what they can when expected just to get a check. Employers pick up on that and you are usually the first singled out to get laid off, fired, or denied a promotion. If you scored low and only are looking for a way to make more money, try being a better employee first! If you cannot work well in a business atmosphere for others, you are not likely to work well in a business for yourself. Further your education and do what you need to do to make yourself a value to any business market, then re-evaluate what you want to do.

If you scored in the middle range, you may want to go to a night school or take a few college courses to gain the skills you need to run a successful business. You should also prepare yourself by saving money to support you while you are starting up your business venture as well as getting the money needed to run your business. If you have an idea of what type of business you want to run, take it to the Small Business Administration and ask for tips from the Retired Workers Corp who volunteer to help beginners. If you sign up for help, you are also in a better position to qualify for a business loan.

If you are in the upper range, congratulations! You are a rare breed who stands a decent chance of making a successful business. You are the types of people those commercials are trying to attract because you are more than likely to succeed making them money in testimonials while others will be treated like "time wasters." If you already know what you want to do, click here to this section on how to do business which will have general guidelines to get you in the right direction.
