The Extent Of Outside Interference In Our Lives
By now, you should have memorized the principles of UCPFUL:
- One must show love to all, especially to self
- One must always forgive, especially self
- One must always show respect, especially to self
- One must always be honest, especially to self
It would be nice if we all lived in a world where everyone could live by these rules, but not everyone does. You are a free being. A person with free choice. If you conduct your life in accordance to social standards, your happiness is often dependant on your inside thoughts. However, the more repressive those social standards become, the more unhappy society will become.
Take the Ten Commandments as an example. To be sure, there really were way more than just the 10 rules. These rules were set apart from the rest of the other laws of Deuteronomy, but were presented around the same time as a guide for the so-called people of god to follow to mark them as his property. Even among the most righteous of the Jews, Muslims and Christians do not follow the Law and the Commandments today. Why? Because it is oppressive to enforce. Our society has evolved from those times.
Today, we hardly recognize most of the 10 commands. Many of the religious will follow them and insist the rest of society must abide by their rules. If society as a whole believed in the same way, this would not be a problem. The problem is most do not take all the commands, if any, seriously. To try to make something historic into today's society is asking much of those who do not adhere to that faith.
The simplicity of the UCPFUL laws make it great for many believers. If you choose not to follow the rules, you make your life more miserable and life miserable for those around you. If you follow those laws, your life improves. There is no outside force micro-managing the details as the responsibility to live your life is on you. Remember, you ARE your own god.
Society does have the right to make rules where we can all live together. However, many governments find themsevles in a position where they must micro-manage all of our lives. Cities, towns, and communities may have more of a responsibility to micro-manage the details that are specific to their area, but when a larger government tries to put that one-size fits all law on all towns everywhere it becomes unacceptable to communities where such rules are ridiculous.
Take an example of smoking marijuana. I personally hate it. I think it stinks. The people I see who smoke it get weird, turn lazy and can become unambitious. I would not want to be that way. However, when it comes to drugs, this one is the lesser of all evils including tobacco, caffiene and alcohol. This is a drug that can be helpful to those in great pain, with problem eyesight, and those who need to increase their appetites. When not used as a drug, the leaves can be used as cloth, paper, ropes and other products.
Most societies do not wish to have it legal in their communities as they have certain standards. Something like this could easily be micro-managed by local areas, but the problem lies with banning it for everyone in every community that may not have the same standards. Making something like that illegal makes the practice even more dirty and dangerous than it needs to be. Making it legal makes it safer and easier to regulate.
Note, I personally do not partake in smoking. I find it disrespectful to myself, so I abstain. It is my own internal choice within. For others, they may see it differently. I just could not in all good conscience say just because I dislike something that others must not participate. I could say the same things about other drugs, smoking in public places, gambling, legalized prostitution, gay marriage, etc. These are things consenting people do that really are none of my business. Just because some people have a problem with addictions does not mean everyone must be made to submit to a nanny state. If certain things were not illegal, the practices of these activities would be safer.
I do not judge others and do not accept the judgement of others. I would make a terrible juror. I don't always like the rules and don't always go along with them.
The less we have an outside source micro-managing our lives, the more real freedom we have to actually live. One should reject as much micro-management from others as possible, but that is only my opinion.
