Have you ever had a song stuck in your mind and you try to grasp at the name of it or who wrote it? That's why I created this song list hit pop songs in the US from 1940-2000 by title and group or singer who sang the songs. So for all of you who love to listen to pop music and want a trip down memory lane, this site is for you.
Many years ago in the early 80s, my sister and I came up with the original seeds for these songs. We first started out by writing out our favorite songs on paper. As time went on and we got busy with other things, this has always been on the back burner until about 6 years ago when my daughter was born. I thought it would be a neat idea to get this going again so she could have a memory of how silly her mommy was to actually listen to such music. A TV show from the 1970s, Name That Tune, was quite an inspiration in creating this in the first place because sometimes there were times we could get stuck trying to remember the name of the song, how did that tune go, or who sang it. I remember when that show was on and wished back then I had some reference to help me think of the name of that tune.
It is quite a daunting task to keep track of this slice of history because every country has their own version of songs they heard as favorite remembered top music charts. This is only a narrow aspect of history as I can only keep track with the American Top 40 Hits. Pop music can vary from country to country, but even in the US what was popular and played on the air all the time in one town may have never been heard in others. For those of you not from the US, I apologize that this is not more extensive, but I must stick with what I know.
The funny thing about the Internet is you meet all kinds of people. I mentioned this idea to a few people on line who thought this was a great thing and many of them have added to this list. Then I decided why not have a vehicle to catalog a slice of our history! For now, this is considered pop history, but one day this will be quite pre-historic. Things that seem important today may be very unimportant later.
This is in alphabetical order by title and also by decade. To find your song, find the decade of your song then first letter in the song title. If you need to hear a clip of the songs, please use the search engines for Amazon.com to be led to the page with the album which may have a clip of the song (scroll down the list to find it). Some of the songs may be located in two decades as they are on the cusp of popularity between two decades.
There are also links to Napster if you want to listen to a clip that happens to be on that page. You must subscribe to Napster to hear the full version, but the free trial will allow you to hear 3 songs free.
So now you know the history, enjoy! And feel free to contact me if you have a suggestion on what other songs should be here. Be sure to list the title, artist and decade. Your input is always appreciated. Thanks for stopping by, please stick around.
