Tennis, as we know it today, is a game that originated in England during the late 1800s. Lawn tennis, as it was called, was mostly a sport enjoyed by the upper middle class. This reputation as an upper middle class sport has been an enduring one, but class barriers have always been open to the masses. An even earlier version of tennis known as royal tennis came from France as early as the Middle Ages that was based on an ancient Greek game of sphairistike.
Tennis can be played as singles (one on one) or doubles (two on two).
A tennis game is called a match which is made up of about 6 sets. The winner scores the most points during all the sets. If no points are made by either it is called, "love". If it is tied, it is called, "deuce".
