Survive In Any Emergency

Protection From Dangerous People

Face it, from the news reports you see all the time, dangerous people are getting media attention. Dangerous people have always existed, it just now with the media we hear about it all the time.

It can make people frightened and feel this is a very dangerous world. Actually, this has always been a dangerous world with pretty frightening people.

Even before Hitler, there were monsters such as Caligula, Nero, Tomas de Torquemada, Vlad II Dracula and so on. If you want to read a good book on how this world has never been a perfect place, just read, "The Pessimist's Guide To History" by Doris and the late Stuart Flexner.

People can be dangerous for reasons such as mental conditions where they cannot tell the difference between right and wrong, or they have no moral conscience, or they may be temporarily disconnected from reality due to trauma, alcohol or drugs.

The crimes these people commit on innocent people vary such as burglary, robbery, murder, rape, drunken driving, drive by shootings, poisoning people, sabotaging the safety of the general public, the list goes on. Of course normal and sane people don't do such things.

They are all mentally off if they commit such acts against other people. This is why the defense of committing crimes and pleading not guilty due to insanity is a hard thing to prove. But in the meantime, between now and when they commit some act to bring them in prison or an early grave, you may encounter such beings. How do you protect yourself against them?

Although a terrorist attack is a rare event in the United States, if you travel outside this country your odds are bumped up that you could run into that kind of trouble. These things can and have happened in the US and will probably increase in the future. It doesn't hurt to prepare for what could happen, but don't obsess over these things.

Terrorists often choose targets that offer little danger to themselves and areas with relatively easy public access. Foreign terrorists look for visible targets where they can avoid detection before or after an attack such as international airports, large cities, major international events, resorts, and high-profile landmarks. Terrorist weapons includes explosives, kidnappings, hijackings, arson, and shootings.

To prepare yourself to deal with a terrorist attack use the same techniques when preparing for any other disaster. When confronted by terrorists be alert and aware of the surrounding area. The very nature of terrorism suggests that there may be little or no warning. Take precautions when traveling. Be aware of conspicuous or unusual behavior. Do not accept packages from strangers. Do not leave luggage unattended. Learn where emergency exists are located. Think ahead about how to evacuate a building, subway or congested public area in a hurry. Learn where staircases are located. Notice your immediate surroundings. Be aware of heavy or breakable objects that could move, fall or break in an explosion.

Preparing for a Building Explosion

Terrorists use methods of cowardice such as blowing up buildings or cars or other methods of mass destruction by remote control. People who live or work in a multilevel building can do the following which is a good idea to prepare for in case of fire anyway:

During an explosion, get out of the building as quickly and calmly as possible. If things are falling all over the place making it hard for you to leave, get under a sturdy table or desk. If there is a fire breaks out during the explosion stay low to the floor and exit the building as quickly as possible. Cover nose and mouth with a wet cloth. When approaching a closed door, use the palm of your hand and forearm to feel the lower, middle and upper parts of the door. If it is not hot, brace yourself against the door and open it slowly. If it is hot to the touch, do not open the door, but seek an alternate escape route. Heavy smoke and poisonous gases collect first along the ceiling. Stay below the smoke at all times.

If you are trapped inside the remains of the building, stay where you are so that you don't kick up dust. Cover your mouth with a handkerchief or clothing. Tap on a pipe or wall so that rescuers can hear where you are. Use a whistle if one is available. Shout only as a last resort so you do not inhale dust or dangerous fumes.

Assisting victims when you are in a position to do so. Untrained persons should not attempt to rescue people who are inside a collapsed building. Wait for emergency personnel to arrive.

Bomb Threats And Packages

If you receive a bomb threat, get as much information from the caller as possible. Keep the caller on the line and record everything that is said. Notify the police and the building management. If you receive a strange package in the mail that may have way too much postage on it, is unevenly shaped, may have wires poking out and may smell like gasoline, call the police or the postal inspector. Open up a window. Evacuate the area immediately. Do not open the package.

Biological And Chemical Warfare

This very real danger can happen when terrorists get a hold of chemicals, nuclear waste, viruses, germs, poison or anything equally dangerous for the purpose of exposing the public at large via means of water, air, land or food.

Sometimes with things like this, there really isn't much you can do to prevent it because these attacks are designed to go undiagnosed for a little bit until victims start dropping and people realize something isn't quite right.

There are other things you could do. Be aware of any strange people who may be in the area who do not live there and do not know anyone who lives there. Talk to them and see what they are up to or if you are not comfortable with that or if they get threatening or if they have weapons, call the police.

Become aware of the normal smells of the air. Be aware of the smell of your water and food. Know what the normal color of your soil is. When something seems off, proceed with caution. If a certain thing seems way off, call the Environmental Protection Agency and the police in case they need to evacuate the area.

Don't panic. If you come in contact with these agents, seek medical attention. Call the Poison Control Center if you cannot get to the emergency room right away and see if they can tell you what to do. Warn others around you that something is going on. Clear any area that is afoul of the elements.

If you keep that in mind, you can increase your odds of surviving terrorism, but keep in mind, if someone is determined to kill, they will kill.

Muggers, kidnappers and rapists

The best thing you can do to avoid being mugged or raped is to avoid the situation that may leave you vulnerable for attack. This does not guarantee it won't happen, but just lessen your chances. See Chapter 11 to see how you can best avoid becoming a victim.

If you are confronted with someone who is sticking a gun in your face and wants money, give them the money. The best way to do that is to be prepared to run. You throw your money in the opposite direction of the way you are going to run. A mugger does not want attention, they just want your money. Your life is worth more than any amount of money you may carry in you wallet.

If you are being raped or someone is violently attacking you, you must learn to use anything around you as a weapon. You could poke your finger in their eye, in the center of the throat near the collarbone or as gross as it seems, way up the nose to cause bleeding. You could use your fist, foot or knee to keep a male in the testicles or a female in the clitoris. I wouldn't recommend biting unless it is a last resort since they may be HIV positive and you wouldn't want that blood in your mouth. If you see an object around that is sharp or pointed, use it. You can also use things that are blunt and wide to try to knock them out. You want to hurt them long enough to let go of their hold on you so you can run away from them. You do not want to stick around and try to kill them no matter how angry you are, they may end up killing you if they get their wind back. Scream as loud as you can. Yell "fire" since people are naturally more apt to pay attention to a cry for "fire".

Never allow yourself to be lead away by an attacker. The longer you go away with the attacker, the greater your chances are of being found dead someplace. If you are abducted by car and are in the passenger seat, try to jump out of the car. If the cars are locked and you can't get out, try attracting some attention. When you get into a fairly crowded traffic area, grab the steering wheel while the kidnapper is driving and turn it sharply to cause an accident. Or hold down the horn. Or grab the wiring underneath the steering column and pull it out. Or thrash about in a car and get the attention of someone. A kidnapper does not want attention. If you attract attention, they will want to let you go to escape.

If you are in a trunk, find a passage to the tail lights of the car and breakthrough the plastic and signal the car behind you. Someone is apt to notice a finger sticking out of the tail light. Do not yell or thrash about too much in a trunk. Your air supply is limited. If you can, see if there are any objects that you can use to wedge open the trunk lid.

The general rule of dealing with these people is to avoid the situation as best as you can. If in the situation, run. If you can't run, attract attention. If money or any item is what they want, give it to them. Report any incident to the police.

If you are raped, go to the emergency room. Insist on talking to a rape counselor if there is one available and talk to the police. Try to remain calm while giving details to the police. It is an unfortunate situation, but sometimes the police are not sensitive enough to deal with rapes and may make you feel like you were the criminal. Just remember, you ARE the victim. Do what you can to save any police and hospital reports. Make sure you seek some counseling by contacting a rape crisis center. Many times, these crisis centers will be able to find someone who will help you in dealing with people who are treating you like the criminal.

These are the most reprehensible people in the world. Unlike the myth that the child molester is some stranger, like the kidnapper and the rapist, it is most likely someone known to the child. A pedophile will use the trusting nature of the child who just wants love, acceptance and approval and will go along with anything because they trusted that adult. Sometimes, especially with incest, it gets violent and turns into outright rape.

A child will feel helpless. A child will always feel on some level that this was not a good thing to do and feel guilty. A child will blame themselves for what happened. A child is apt to keep a secret for fear of being punished.

The best thing you can do for your child to prevent this from happening is by paying more attention to them and developing a strong self esteem. Pedophiles can sense a lonely child who needs more love and attention and play on that vulnerability.

Also, be sure to talk to your child about sex and the difference between a good touch and a bad touch. Keep the lines of communication open so your child will feel safe in coming to you if something does happen. Believe your child if they tell you something happens. If a child tells you something happened. Don't put words in their mouths, let them tell what happened to the proper authorities. Your input may cloud the way they tell it to the police who in turn may not believe it. If you suspect your child has been molested, ask, but don't push. It may be that they don't want to talk about it yet or that nothing happened. Let them know they can talk to you about anything.

Look out for these signs that your child may have been molested:

All, some, or none of these things may be present. You must know your child and what is normal so you can tell when something is wrong. Get your child help when it is needed and never blame them.

If you are in an area where there are known gangs, and this is not just an inner city problem anymore, be aware of what their "territory" is and never venture in those parts alone. Be aware of the idiosyncrasies of the gang. If they favor a certain color and hate another, don't wear either. Be polite to them. Most of the time, these are just bored kids with nothing to do. If you are respectful to them, they will leave you alone.

As one person, there really isn't much you can do about a gang problem. This needs to be a community effort.

Gangs are, in effect, a social club. A byproduct of these clubs relate around a certain activity or activities. Some just hang out and harass people as they go by. Others deal drugs. Some are basically pimps who sell their female companions for sexual relations. Some are into hard core violence and destruction. Some are racists. Some are sexist. Some are religious zealots. Many are a danger to themselves and the community around them.

Since a gang is a last resort of a social club, usually there is also a lack of something else for the kids to do. This is why the community must get involved. If a neighbor has a drug habit, see to it they get some help. If you try to help those and keep on top of the addicts in your community, there is no profit in it for drug dealing gangs. Gang up as a neighborhood to report drug deals and prostitution. (Although it is my personal opinion that the fact that these activities are illegal makes it that much more dangerous which makes it a high profit crime and participants will get trigger happy if you encroach on their earnings. If legalized, both could be regulated and contained within certain areas.)

As a community, if you have a lot of young people, make sure there are things for them to do and with plenty of adult supervision. Libraries could be opened later. More movies that are meant for young people could be shown. A roller rink, dance club, gym for teens or something to keep them occupied will be an alternative to joining gangs. The key is community involvement and adult supervision.

Drunk Drivers And Road Rage

No matter what excuse they try to give, they are criminals. It is against the law to get in a car and drive drunk. This is not about the right of the driver to mangle his or her body. If they wish to abuse their body with alcohol or any other type of drug, that is their business. It is everyone else's' business if that person who is under the influence gets behind the wheel of the car. Drunk driving is the leading cause of "accidental" death in the US. I don't call it an accident. If a drunk driver gets behind the wheel of the car, and kills someone, it is manslaughter.

In order to get a drivers license, you are tested on your knowledge of drinking and driving laws. In most states, that is 1/4 of the test that you must pass. A licensed driver knows this is against the law. A licensed driver knows the potential danger of driving while drunk. A licensed driver then chooses if they are going to get behind the wheel of a car or not if they are under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Sometimes, someone who is under the influence will decide to drive anyway. Their judgment is clouded, but they know it is wrong. If you know of someone who is drunk who plans on driving, it is your responsibility to see that you take away the keys from that person and either drive them where they need to go if you are sober, or let them sleep it off where you are, or call a taxi for them, or have someone pick them up. If they leave in spite of your actions, it is your duty to report them to the police.

Don't think of that last option as ratting on a friend. You are probably saving their life and the lives of everyone else on the road or outside for that matter. A drunk driver is not only a danger to himself, but to anyone he can hit by car whether they are driving another car, a passenger in his car or another car, a pedestrian, or even someone in their own home (a drunk driver can crash through a home causing death and injury). Sometimes an incident results in death and sometimes they all walk away with nothing but property damage. Then there is the middle ground, people who are maimed for life because of a drunk driver. People who are covered in burns, or paralyzed, or in a comatose state, these are also victims of drunk driving.

If you see someone who is weaving in and out of traffic and driving erratically, stay clear of that vehicle. Get a license plate number and description of the car. Call the police and report it.

Road rage is just as dangerous as drunk driving. You are to drive defensively, not aggressively. If someone cuts you off in traffic, honking your horn and giving them the finger is an effective way to communicate your disdain. However, it is road rage when you not only do that, but tail that driver, weave in and out of traffic to keep up with that driver, speed up to cut them off and so on. By this kind of road rage, you not only risk your life and those of any passengers in your vehicle, but also the driver you are trying to get even with and everyone else on the road.

If someone cuts you off and there was no property damage, then just honk your horn. Don't make a bad event worse. If you see road rage in action, call the police and report those involved. It takes two people to play this dangerous game of road tag and one to end it. Keep your calm and do not retaliate. If you are at fault, wave apologetically to the driver.

If you are in a car collision, whether from a drunk driver or any other type of accident, you must do the following:

Be suspicious if a vehicle has been following you a little too close or the driver act erratically. If the car is relatively safe except for a fender bender and you don't feel you can trust that person, move the accident to a public place to exchange information. Do not open your car door. Lock the car door. If you want to talk to the driver to tell them to meet you in a public place, only open the window a crack, less than 1/8th of an inch.
