In this first episode, we are briefly introduced to the show's main characters including Joey Jerimiah, Wheels, Ms. Avery, Mr Raditch and the like as extras. This story's focus is on Stephanie, Voula, Arthur, Yick, and Joey. I won't go into all the rest of these with this commentary - YIKES! 80s clothing and style!
Stephanie Kaye goes to school with her brother Arthur Kobalowsky. She's a grade 8 and he is in 7. She wants to be a popular sex kitten to befit her new mature image and having anyone know Arthur is her geeky brother will not do, so she lays down the rules that no one is to know they are related. Their parents are divorced and she changed her last name just like her mother. Arthur kept his name and lives with his dad. [DTNG had a similiar storyline with popular Ashley and nerdy "stepbrother" Toby.]
Arthur meets up with Joey who misleads him from class to lock him in a broom closet. He is rescued by another fellow grade 7 named Yick and they become friends. Eventually, Yick meets Joey and suffers Arthur's same fate and his is rescued by his new friend.
Stephanie runs for school president with her best friend Voula who do it because the announcer spoke to the "guys" asking them to run. Stephanie takes offense and thinks she could be the President and Voula encourages her to run and works hard as the assistant.
Joey also manages to help Stephanie win the election with the most sexist campaign ever. Voula cautions Stephanie about this approach and lets her know all the girls hate it, but Stephanie ignores this advice because if all the boys vote for her she will win. So she puts up with the cat calls, kisses and sexist talk about her in order to win. Only she makes a big mistake by thanking only Joey for his hard work and neglecting her friend.
Stephanie wins the election, but discovers she took on more than she bargained because now she would be tied down with meetings, commitments, and speeches. She lost all the respect of most of the girls in the school. The boys think of her as a sex object. And worst yet, she lost her best friend, Voula.
This first episode has the characters out of place, but eventually it would be forgotten. Joey hung out with Hank. Wheels and the twins were in grade 7 with Ms. Avery. Liz was also in this episode which is a fluke because she just transferred into this school during the next season.
