1-08. Nothing to Fear

If you get this on DVD, be sure to listen to some classic PA announcements.

LD leaves the house to come into the garage where her father and partner, Jeff, are working on cars. His partner comments on LD's breakfast marshmallows on toast. As she tries to leave, her dad asks if she finished cleaning the kitchen. She says no, so he tells her to do it right after school. She is disappointed because he promised she could help fix Mr. Jeremiah's transmission. Her dad says it's time she stopped monkeying around in the garage, she's a 13 year old girl. She's supposed to be turning into a lady. He tells her to go before she's late for school and to get rid of her cap and if her mom would let her wear a cap like that. LD mutters, "Drop dead," and goes to school. Suddenly, he clutches his chest and tells Jeff he'd better call the doctor.

In school, Spike, Voula and LD are learning about maps in the local area and Duncan street, the one where they have to map out, is near a hospital. LD says she hates hospitals. Ms Avery reminds them the work is due on Friday and LD is doubtful it can get done by then, but Voula says if they get started now it shouldn't be a problem. LD says she can't after school because she has to clean the kitchen as if she were a maid or something. They ask how long that should take because they could meet up at 4:30 and do it then. LD says she will meet them. Spike asks if her dad is giving her a hard time. She says he was okay until her brothers moved out, but now all he does is nag and try to turn her into a little princess. She tells them sometimes she wished he would get out of her life.

Caitlin and Melanie are in the hallway and they see Snake. It is obvious Melanie has a huge crush on him as she tells him hello. Then Melanie walks into the library where Suzy is scolding Yick and Arthur. She wonders what's going on then finds out there's a snake named Amadeus on the loose and Yick and Arthur are responsible. Melanie is afraid of snakes.

LD comes home from school and goes to the garage. Jeff tries to tell her about her dad and she assumes it is about the dishes, but he stops her and lets her know he is in the hospital for problems with his heart. Jeff tells her not to worry as her father phoned earlier and he was going to be okay. He had a list of things she needed to round up for him to bring to the hospital.

Voula and Spike are waiting on the steps of the school and growing impatient as LD did not show up. Spike said she did a science project with her before, but LD did not do anything and she did all the work. Voula thought she had the flu then, but Spike says she always has excuses.

At home, LD is trying to get everything on the list for her father. As she rushes around the room, she stops to look at a picture of her and her mom and remembers a conversation she had with her father about her mother being in the hospital. He told her she wasn't feeling well and the hospital would make her feel better and she would be home soon. [Her mom died years ago.]

Voula and Spike get tired of waiting and call LD to find out why she's not there. LD tells them she forgot and she can't come today, but maybe tomorrow. Spike knew she would have some excuse. As Jeff leaves to go to the hospital, he asks LD if she is ready and she says she will stay there. She tells him if her dad will be home, he will want a clean kitchen so she has to clean it or he will get mad. Jeff tells her he would rather see his daughter than a clean kitchen, but LD still refuses to go. LD gives Jeff the stuff her dad wanted and asks if she has any messages. She tells him to tell her father that she hopes he gets back home soon and she misses him. Jeff tells LD to lock up, then leaves.

At school the next day, Arthur makes an announcement about the snake on the loose as Melanie walks down the hall dressed really weird [pants tucked way down in boots.] Alex asks Melanie what's up with the boots and she says it's because the snake is loose. She turns around and says hi to Snake who says, "Nice boots," which makes for an awkward moment.

In the gym, Voula and Spike are doing stretches as LD approaches them and says hi and "Thank goodness for gym, eh.". Spike is not too happy and sarcastically tells her thanks for all the help yesterday. Voula tells LD they still have a lot of work to do and ask if she is going to help today. She tells them she can't today and Spike gets angry and asks if she thinks it's fair that they get to do all the work. LD says she's sorry, but her dad's in the hospital and she has to go and visit him which is more important than the stupid project. Spike apologizes and says they will cover her for the project.

At the end of school, kids are talking about the snake on the loose and Voula and Spike assure LD they will cover for her as Heather, Erica, and Joey hope her dad gets well.

LD stops by the shop with flowers in her hand and talks to Jeff. He says it's good she is going to stop by and see her father. She asks Jeff how long he had his apartment and what it was like living alone. He says it's nice, but it gets lonely sometimes, but at least his parents are only a few blocks away. He sees the look on LD's face and assures her he will be okay. Jeff tells her he won't come with her because Mr. Jeremiah is screaming her wants his car back. He tells her to go without him.

LD goes to St Michael's Hospital to see her dad. She walks through the doors and past some sick patients and then looses her nerve as she remembers her mother being there and her father assuring her hospitals are where people go to get better. She hands the flowers to a clerk and asks her to give it to her father. The clerk tells her visiting hours are not over and she can go see him, but LD tells her she had to go and was in a hurry then quickly escapes the hospital.

LD stood outside the hospital and called her father from a pay phone to check in on him. He tells her thank you for the flowers and asks why she didn't come up. She said she was working on a school project with friends and she couldn't come up and they were waiting for her now. He asks if the kitchen is clean as he doesn't want to come home and see it a mess.

The next day at school, Yick, Arthur and Suzy are in the basement looking for the snake since the basement is warm the snake may have gone there. Arthur says he has a plan to catch him IF he is still there. Suzy is concerned when he says that because if he got out of the school, he could be anywhere and hurt or dead. So they lay out a trap with a box and bologna.

Melanie is still in boots with pants taped inside. Alex and his friends decide to have a little fun at her expense as they sneak a rubber snake down the other side of her locker. She yells out "Snake!" and Snake comes out behind his locker and says, "Yah?" The boys go running off laughing at her.

Voula and Spike are taking a collection to get flowers for LD's dad who sponsored their softball team last summer. LD walks into the classroom and they hide the funding project. Voula asks how her father was doing and LD tells her he's still in the hospital. Then Voula asks how his eyes look as you can really tell how much better a person is getting when you look into their eyes. She tells Voula his eyes look the same as always, she guesses.

Later on that day, Voula and Spike are getting flowers from the hospital gift shop to take to Mr. Delacorte. They surprise him with flowers from the whole class and said they didn't tell LD about this surprise and wanted her to find them next time she came to visit. Mr. Delacorte informs them she hasn't come to see him yet because she has a big mapping project to do. He asks them to tell LD the next time they see her that he's okay.

In the school basement Yick and Arthur find out what they caught - a rubber snake.

Voula and Spike wonder why LD lied and said she visited her father when she didn't. The next day at school, Voula goes to find LD who is sitting alone in the dark gym. She tells LD they went to take flowers to her day yesterday and LD asks how his eyes looked. Voula told her fine, he was going to be okay. LD tells Voula to get to class. Voula asks why she doesn't go to see her dad. LD explained when her mom was sick they took her to the hospital and everyone told her she was going to be fine. LD visited her and then she died. Voula assures LD not everyone dies who goes to the hospital and points out her mother just had surgery and came out okay and Voula had her tonsils out and she was fine. LD tells her that her father doesn't really want her to come over anyway because he doesn't really like the way she is and he always yells at her and tells her she does stuff wrong. Voula tells her he sounds like a normal dad to her. Voula tells LD he needs her and she is all he has left.

Later on, LD goes to the hospital remembering a conversation with her dad when her mom was there and why she couldn't see her.

In the school library, Suzy is mad at Yick and Arthur for not finding the snake yet. Melanie walks in and hears a noise and asks what's that. She spots the snake in a bag and calls for Suzy who realizes he must have been there all along. Alex walks in as Arthur puts the snake up to him and show him, but it turns out Alex is afraid of snakes and Melanie is no longer afraid of them now she realizes they aren't slimy creatures.

LD is still remembering her mom in the hospital with a lot of machines after walking in to see her. She asked her dad what was going on and why all those things were hooked up to her. Then she remembers her dad telling her mommy won't be coming home, but the hospital did the best they could. LD walks into the empty room where her father is supposed to be and takes off her cap. She sits on the bed worried about what happened and then her father comes from behind her. She is happy he's alive. He says of course he's alive, he only has angina. Then they go home. She left her cap behind and her father reminds her to take it. He says, "If you think hospitals are scary, try being a father of a teenage daughter."
