I must get right into that PA announcement. Usually they say some far out things, but this one made me LOL. - "Students who had the tuna surprise should go see the school nurse."
Suzy gives a presentation to her class on her family tree and shows a souvenier from her relative who was an astronaught with NASA. Everyone loved her speech. Then the teacher announces it would be Yick's turn next time as class was dismissed. Arthur talks to Yick after class and asks to play ball, but Yick passed as he had to get ready for the assignment. Arthur wondered what he had to do to get ready, but Yick was sure no one would be interested in boat people so he needed something interesting.
Rick is eyeing Caitlin [Cause Girl who would eventually be meet another Cause Girl by the name of Emma in DTNG] with her Environmental Action Committee consisting of Kathleen and Suzy asking for people to sign their petition. Kathleen is complaining that this is a dumb idea. They see Rick and make rude remarks about him until he comes over to sign the petition. Caitlin thinks that perhaps Rick is a good person if people would just give him a chance.
Rick goes to the boys' room to smoke and is given a hard time by Shane for smoking. Rick asks for advice on how to get Caitlin to notice him and Shane tells him to join the Environmental Action Committee. He scoffs at the name and calls it an Inaction Committee because they don't seem to be doing anything.
Rick stops by to join the committee, but is given a lukewarm reception by Kathleen who is more concerned about discussing the name of the committee than actually doing anything. She clearly does not think Rick is good enough to join, but Caitlin convinces everyone to let him join as he did sign the petition.
Yick is searching for something to bring to his presentation and sees an inexpensive vase in a store window and buys it. He takes it to school the next day and tells Arthur it was an old family heirloom he forgot they had. Arthur offered to take it to have it appraised to see exactly how old it was, but Yick declined.
Rick went with Caitlin to her house to discuss committee business. She was planning a speech to announce at school the next day to get people to sign the petition. Rick said it sounded boring and came up with a great idea to get people's attention - do a crappy rap! The plan worked and people came from everywhere to sign it. However, Kathleen was not impressed and still would not give Rick a break. Rick and Caitlin suggested they give the petition to the factor, but Kathleen said it was a dumb idea because no one would read it. Rick argued back that this was a phony action committee if they were doing nothing but talking. Caitlin agreed.
While trying to reach a sign that said, "Honesty is the best policy," Arthur accidently knocked over Yick's "heirloom" from the teacher's desk. He panicked and left a message on the blackboard for Yick claiming to have gone to get the vase appraised.
At Caitlin's home, she went on about Rick to Suzy who complained that she was treating him as a cause and admit she liked him. Caitlin denied having feelings for him as he was not her type, but Suzy insisted there was nothing wrong with liking him.
Yick tried to get Arthur to give him back the vase, but Arthur has been avoiding him because he did not want to tell him he broke it.
Caitlin, Suzy and Rick go to the factory to give the petition to someone in person. The girls want to back out, but Rick insists they do it. They wait in the office and a spokesperson comes out and assures them they do not pollute any more than the Ministry standards allow. Caitlin questions that claim and says the newspapers think otherwise, but the spokesperson says they say those things to sell papers. Rick isn't buying the story and asks if he is the boss, but the man says the President is in a meeting. Rick tells he they would rather wait for him, but the man takes the petition out of his hand and insists they leave.
Caitlin and Suzy seem to think the man will do the right thing and give the President their petition, but Rick tells them he will never see it and this was all a waste of time. He goes off angry and has a cigarette. Kathleen sees him smoking.
The next day, Arthur admits to Yick right before the presentation that he broke the vase. Yick has to go on and tell the whole story of his adventure being on the boat with the other refugees. The class is really enthralled by the story. Arthur tries to hand Yick a lot of money to make up for the vase, but Yick admits that it was a cheap vase he bought and when Arthur asks why didn't he tell him it wasn't a family heirloom, Yick asks why didn't he tell him he broke it.
At the committee, Kathleen breaks away from the urgent business of discussing the name of the group to discuss why Rick does not belong - he is a polluter who smokes. The rest of the group is shocked and he is shamed out of there. Then they continue to talk about the name.
Rick waits until the group is over to talk to Caitlin who wants nothing to do with him for embarassing her, after all, she did defend him to the rest of the group who thought he was stupid and said they were right. Rick stood up for himself and reminded her that it was his idea for the announcement that got people to sign and it was his idea to hand in the petition. He said that they were a bunch of do-gooders who did nothing but talk and it was a stupid group.
The next day, Caitlin comes around and apologizes to Rick and tells him he was right about everything and he really was smart.
