2-01.Eggbert

Spike is in a counseling group for teen mothers-to-be where it is suggested they experiment on what it would be like to be a mother. They are given an egg to take care of for two weeks as if it were their own baby. They must protect it and watch over it and take it with them or arrange for daycare for it.

At school, Shane is waiting alone to talk to Spike. Kathleen and Melanie are gossiping about the situation Shane and Spike are in. Kathleen blames Spike and thinks she should not be allowed in the school while Melanie reminds her that it is also Shane's fault.

As Spike comes in with Erica and Heather, Shane tries to talk to her, but Spike says they have nothing to talk about. Erica and Heather concur that Shane is a creep. They notice the egg Spike is carrying and she explains to them about the experiment as Shane watches the group.

As Spike passes by Kathleen and her friends, Kathleen states she thinks Spike belongs in a home while her friends disagree and think if Spike should be in one, so should Shane, but she argues that he is not the one pregnant and setting a bad example.

Wheels and Joey are in the boys' room talking about French kissing. Joey is saying it is dangerous because a girl could bit your tongue and it could get infected and you will never talk again - it happens all the time! Wheels thinks he does not know what he is talking about and then Shane enters the room. Joey ask Shane, "the expert," if he knows a lot about women and he says "a bit". Joey is not buying the modesty because he got Spike pregnant. Then Shane gets on him and tells him it is not a joke and how he is upset that Spike won't speak to him and he doesn't know what to do. They ask what his parents think about the situation and Shane says he hasn't told them yet because they would send him to a private school like they did with his brothers.

Further down the hall, Stephanie is getting rid of her slutty clothes and Alexa can't believe she is throwing them away. Stephanie says Alexa can have them. Stephanie wants to have a more mature image after what happened last school year.

Arthur approaches Yick and attacks him with a water gun, then they are stopped by a young kid looking for Ms. Avery's class. They tell him where it is and asks why he wants to know and the kid [Scooter] informs them he is in her class. The duo wonder why did they start allowing little kids to go to their school because they are so immature.

In the classroom, all the girls are surrounding Spike and her egg as she explains the experiment. Alexa holds the egg and offers to give it a face. She tells her friends she is going back and forth over the issue on what to do with the baby if she should keep it or put it up for adoption. Alexa says she loves babies and would keep it while Lucy tells her she is too young and crazy if she thinks she can handle a baby. The group name the egg Eggbert.

Wheels, Joey, and Snake notice Stephanie's new, conservative look and think she must be going to a costume party as a nun.

Mr. Raditich enters the room with a new student and introduces him as Simon Dexter. He sits next to Stephanie and she is excited. She asks Lucy if that cute guy is the same one from the commercials.

In Ms. Avery's class, she introduces the new student, Scott Webster who went through an accelerated course in elementary school. He tells the class everyone calls him Scooter. As Ms. Avery escorts Scooter to his seat, Arthur squirts Yick with a gun and he cries out. Ms. Avery asks if he said something and he tells her no while Arthur has a big grin on his face.

When class lets out, Shane gets Spike in the stairway to get her to talk to him. He wants to know why they can't still be friends like they used to be and she tells him because she was not pregnant before when they were friends. Passers-by give them strange looks. He tells her it was an accident and did not mean to get her pregnant. Shane says they still like each other and he feels bad and wants to help. Spike gives him a chance for redemption. He must watch Eggbert for one week to prove he can really help and he must seriously take care of the egg as if it were a real baby. Shane is worried about explaining it to his parents.

When he gets home, his mom asks why he is late and she assumes it was because of a girl. His mom says she must watch out for those girls. His father is a minister and is talking on the phone to someone in trouble. When he is off the phone, his wife asks about the conversation and he says it is complicated and about Amy Carson's boy. His mom asks Shane to get her an egg from the refrigerator as his father asks if kids at his school do drugs. Shane says he doesn't think so. His father tells him how crack seems to be going around the schools and how lately it seems that kids are getting themselves in all kinds of trouble messing up their lives. He says it makes him appreciate what a fine young man he is.

The next day as Shane comes to school, a lot of kids are making fun of him and the egg. Heather, Erica and Stephanie are on the stairs talking about the new kid and wondering if he really is the guy on the commercial. Heather thinks they are being silly and if they really want to know, just ask him. They see Simon approaching and Stephanie asks them to act casual. Simon tells them hello as he passes by and then Erica and Stephanie get really excited as he leaves.

Shane continues to get heckled as he walks down the hallway. Joey, Wheels and Snake approach him to give him a hard time and make bad egg-related puns at his expense.

Yick sneaks up on Arthur and attacks him with a water gun and Arthur strikes back with his. Scooter walks by and stops to watch them. The boys stop and ask Scooter what he's looking at then turn their guns on him as he runs out of there. Then they continue the fight as they scoff little kids.

Shane is at his desk watching Eggbert as BLT snatches it away from behind and tosses it around. Spike enters the room and is not please at what she sees as Shane is trying to get the egg back. Lucy comes in and announces to the class a party at her house. Spike, as well as the rest of the class, are thrilled about the party, but Shane is depressed knowing he has an egg to watch.

The scene quickly forwards to the end of class as they are coming out talking about how Lucy's parties are the best. Alexa is talking with Simon asking where he is from and he tells her New York. Shane goes up to Spike and asks her to take the egg for the night, but she refuses and tells him if it were a real baby he would have to deal with it and couldn't go to the party. Shane complains it's not a real baby, just an egg. Spike tells him it is a real baby until Monday, if he is really serious about taking responsibility. As he begs her to take the egg, she tells him if he really wants to go to the party to ask his parents to babysit the egg.

In the hallway, Alexa is talking intimately with Simon. Heather, Erica and Stephanie are watching and encouraging Stephanie to just go up and talk to him. She says she will wait until they finish talking and they kid her about being shy. Stephanie tries to approach them and Simon walks away. Alexa turns around and sees the girls as she is excited to tell them that she is going to the party with Simon. As the girls walk away, Stephanie complains that Alexa is a big phony and doesn't know what Simon sees in her and how Alexa looks terrible in the clothes she gave her.

Scooter walks down the hallway and everyone greets him politely until he goes by Yick and Arthur who say nothing to him. [Brief conversation with Arthur and Dorothy, his real life sister, but they play cousins on the show.] Scooter pauses while Arthur and Yick are not paying attention and hits Arthur with a water gun as he ducks out the door. Arthur thinks Yick did it and complains because they had a truce.

Shane continues to be harassed by fellow classmates as he walks down the hallway and is stopped at his locker by Joey and company who rag on him about how he gets to stay at home to watch an egg while they go to Lucy's fabulous party.

Lucy is at home preparing for the party and the doorbell rings. Heather, Erica and Stephanie are the first to arrive. The girls head for the liquor and Lucy asks them to not touch the booze explaining that ever since she was caught shoplifting, her parents have stopped trusting her.

Shane is at home with his parents who are playing gin. Shane is watching them as he is trying to study, but can't focus. His father comments how it is unusual for Shane to be home on a Friday night, but Shane says he has a lot of homework. His father praises him for being such a good student.

Lucy's party is turning into a disaster as everyone is sitting around bored. The girls are trying to figure out how to deal with a cassette tape that was eaten by the machine. Lucy gets after Joey for putting his drink on the table without a coaster. Wheels, Snake and Joey are on the sofa trying to listen to a Walkman and can't really enjoy it because they can't get the volume up.

Alexa and Simon are the only ones having fun as they are sharing a great conversation. Simon asks her to a movie later and she agrees and offers him a pop [the term "pop" is common in Canada and parts of the Northern and Mid-West US whereas "soda" or "soda pop" is common in the rest of the US and some parts of the world and in the UK it is sometimes referred to as a "fizzy drink".] As Alexa leaves, Snake comments to Simon that he must like her. Simon mentions about how he loves the way she dresses. Stephanie overhears the conversation. As Alexa passes by Stephanie, Steph demands the return of her clothes she lent her. Alexa says that Steph gave them to her because she did not want them any longer, but now Steph says she changed her mind. Alexa refuses. Steph offers to buy them back, but Alexa refuses again saying she likes the clothes and walks away. Shane is at the door and surprises Spike who gets after him because he was supposed to be watching the egg at home. Shane pulls the egg out of his pocket and explains lots of people bring their babies to parties. Joey is excited and bumps Eggbert out of Shane's hand. Eggbert gets thrown around the room to lighten up the boring party. Shane catches the egg. The kids want him to throw it, but Spike gives him a dirty look letting him know he will be in big trouble if he does. Shane tosses the egg and Spike walks out really upset with him. Shane recaptures the egg and goes after Spike. Shane wonders why she is so upset. It was just an egg and it was embarassing to carry around. Spike tells him it is also embarassing that she is pregnant and she is going to get fat and she is scared. He tells her he is scared, too. She tells him he is only scared his parents will find out and his parents will find out eventually when people talk. He tells her he just can't tell them and she is quick to let him know that's the difference between them because he has a choice and can pretend nothing happened and wherever she goes she will be pregnant. He said it is only an egg and an angry Spike throws it to the ground. She is mad because he claimed to want to help until it became inconvienent. He only said he wanted to help to make himself stop feeling guilty. As she walks away, Shane calls after her, but she refuses to listen to him. Shane goes home and tells his father and mother the news.
