2-02. A Helping Hand

Mr. Raditch is absent due to an appendix attack and the class is speculating on the horrid nature of the new substitute teacher, until he walks in the door. The class is silent as he goes to the head of the class and announces he is Mr. Colby and he will be teaching the class. A few days pass and Mr. Colby is handing back papers to the class making differing remarks to the class depending on their work. He seems especially impressed with Lucy's paper. L.D. leaves at the end of the bell as BLT ask if she is going to play ball, but she declines. L.D is happy about her good mark while Erica and Heather tease her about never caring about her grades before she became teacher's pet. Stephanie is upset that the only reason Simon likes Alexa is because of the clothes she gave her. Heather, Erica and Lucy agree that she should just buy new clothes, but Stephanie says it cost her a lot to get them in the first place. Lucy is convinced Simon is not worth it as most of the guys in the school are immature anyway. Mr. Colby leaves class and says goodbye to the girls as they fawn him. In the auditorium, the Zit Remedy is practicing their song while Simon and Alexa are watching. When they finish and Simon and Alexa leave, Joey confides he does not trust Simon, but Snake says to give him a chance since he is new. Wheels has to leave early because of tutoring since his marks were so bad. Joey complains that he always has to leave and how are they ever going to make it. As Wheels goes to Ms. Avery's class, she asks if he has made the appointment to see the eye doctor. Wheels says he hasn't and doesn't think he needs glasses, but she points out the headaches and eyestrain are signs he might need them. She gives him the schedule for tutoring, but Wheels complains it conflicts with his band practice. Ms. Avery points out that both his parents and she agree perhaps it would be best to leave the band alone for awhile until his marks improve. LD is in the girls room playing with her hair as Lucy walks in. She tells Lucy that all boys ever want to do with her is play ball and she wants to look more like a lady. Lucy offers her help and LD agrees. Shane approaches Spike at her locker to inform her that he told his parents about the baby. She asked how they took it and he said they were upset, but didn't yell and scream. She thinks it was good until he tells her his parents want them and her parents to get together to talk about the situation and both agree this is a bad idea. LD and Lucy leave school to do the makeover. Mr. Colby approaches them to talk to Lucy and puts his hand on her shoulder complimenting her on her essay on when a best friend moves away. She says she misses her friend, Voula, but still sees her and has plans with her over the weekend. As he leaves, LD looks concerned and comments that he likes to touch and says it is creepy when a teacher is like that. Lucy thinks it isn't, but that he is just special. When Lucy and LD comes home, she turns on the answering machine to listen to messages from her parents who reminder her they will be late and that she has an appointment with the lawyer about her shoplifting incident and not to make other plans. The next message is from Voula who has to cancel her weekend plans because her parents do not want her to hang around Lucy. Lucy looks disappointed, but quickly ushers LD downstairs to start the makeover. LD asks about how her parents took it when she was caught shoplifting. She says her parents were disappointed in her, but they weren't as bad as Voula's parents. Now she and her parents did more things together as a result, but they suddenly got too busy again. She said she didn't mind it. LD asks if she ever gets lonely, but Lucy says she is too independent for that. LD said she is not that way at all and almost fell apart when her father went into the hospital. When done with the makeover, LD looks at herself in the mirror [streetwalker look?] as Lucy is proud of her accomplishment. She's worried about what her dad will think. Lucy makes her promise not to take it off as she leaves. LD mentions she also misses Voula and leaves. As Lucy closes the door, LD looks back and is anxious to take it off. In class Mr. Colby leads the class in discussion of the death penalty and asks if it works as a deterent. The class is divided on the topic and talks amongst themselves as Mr. Colby tries to look down Lucy's blouse. LD takes notice. The bell rings and as the class pours out Stephanie is berating Alexa and asks when is she going to give them back. Alexa reminds her that she is the one who gave it to her. Stephanie calls her a thief. Snake, Joey and Wheels are discussing why Wheels cannot be in the band and he says it is only until his marks improve. Wheels says they can play without him. The boys notice Lucy in the room alone with Mr. Colby and think it's weird that he seems to have so much interest in her. Mr. Colby and Lucy walk out and his arm is around her as he praises her. As he leaves, LD tells Lucy that Mr. Colby looked down her blouse. Lucy asks why is she trying to cause trouble and LD says she is only saying she should watch out. Lucy is mad and thinks she is jealous because LD is too chicken to wear makeup and talk to boys while someone likes Lucy. LD comes back with, "Well at least I don't shoplift." Lucy then says, "See if I ever help you again," then walks away. Lucy comes back home to an answering machine with a message from her mom that they will be late and left money for pizza. The next day, Wheels is walking with Shane. Wheels now has glasses. Ms. Avery notices and asks him if everything looks better. Other kids say he looks great. He goes up to Snake and Joey and asks what they think about it and they say he looks okay. Joey and Snake were discussing the fate of the band and possibly replacing him, but Joey thinks they can't do it. Alexa returns the clothes to Stephanie because her mom found them and complained about it because she looked like a "lady of the evening" and is grounded for two weeks. Stephanie mocks sympathy and is glad to get her clothes back. The kids are in class and the bell ring. Mr. Colby asks Lucy to stay behind as the class starts to leave. LD looks concerned and stays behind to wait for her. Mr. Colby asks Lucy for help in understanding how Mr. Raditch's system works and if she stay awhile. Lucy agrees. Mr. Colby asks her to wait there as he had to take care of something first. Snake and Joey complain about having to put the band on hold. As they walk down the hall, they hear someone playing bass. They investigate it and find Simon playing then ask him if he has ever heard of the band Zit Remedy. Wheels goes to Ms. Avery for tutoring as the rest of the school starts to leave the building. Mr. Colby comes back to the classroom where Lucy is waiting and asks her to sit down then closes the door, commenting on how he is glad they get along so well and says she is so mature and sensitive. He mentions when she handed in that paper about losing her friend it was like when he was divorced from his wife and how he can relate to her lonliness. He comes close to her and sits down next to her and leans in. Lucy is clearing starting to feel uncomfortable and asks about Mr. Raditch's system. He says they can wait awhile and is more interesting in "people like us" and touches her on the shoulder and mentions they should help each other. He tells her to relax and not be so tense, he is her friend. As Wheels is studying, he is missing a book and returns to his locker. Mr. Colby is getting a bit too friendly commenting on how sensuous her scarf is. Wheels looks in the class as he comes to his locker and notices Mr. Colby is reaching down to Lucy and touching her. He opens the door to break them up as Mr. Colby asks in a stern voice what he was doing there. Wheels tells him to get a book, Ms. Avery sent him. Lucy quickly excuses herself and runs out the classroom while he yells out at her that he's glad they had the talk. Wheels runs after Lucy who ran home quickly looking for her mom and dad only to get another message they were going to be late and to congratulate her on the marks she got lately and to keep up the good work as she cries. LD knocks on the door to return her scarf and notices Lucy has been crying and asks what's wrong. Lucy hugs LD and continues to cry. The next day at school, Wheels comes to school talking to Spike. Joey and Snake approach him excited to tell him they found another bass player, Simon. Wheels asks what about when he gets back and they say they will be the first band with two bass players. Heather and Erica are waiting outside the restroom for Stephanie and she comes out with her old style thanks to the clothes she just got back. She is hoping it will get Simon to notice her and make Alexa jealous. As Simon and Alexa approach, they say Hi to Simon and he says , "Hi twins," completely ignoring Stephanie. Mr. Colby runs into Lucy on the stairway and tells her good morning and apologizes for yesterday, "Not that anything happened" and asks if she would come by after class to help him since they didn't get to it. Lucy tells him "not in a million years." Wheels approaches Lucy and comments that he saw him touch her and says if she needs a witness he would be there for her.
