2-04. Dinner and a Show

Shane's father is on the phone talking to his son, Carl, about Shane's unfortunate situation and how Shane will be going to a private school, but knows that Shane does not want to go.

At school, Arthur encourages Yick to asks Melanie out again. Yick is nervous that it might end up like the last time.

Melanie and Kathleen are on the outside school stairs. When Shane walks by, Kathleen yells out in a mean way, "Hi Daddy." Melanie thinks she' s mean, but Kathleen says getting Spike pregnant wasn't nice either. And then she say, "And here comes mommy" as Spike pulls in with her mom in the car. Spike tells her mom it feels weird like there are butterflies in her tummy, but she assures her it is normal during that time of her pregnancy when the baby moves. Spike takes a bit out of a bar and her mother gets on her case about not eating breakfast as she is still growing and is pregnant and she needs to take better care of herself.

Yick is waiting in the hallways for Melanie to approach. Kathleen and Melanie are talking about plans to meet up after school. Kathleen says they can't go to her house because her mom is busy. Melanie says Kathleen's mom is always busy. Yick catches them and asks her out. Melanie is excited and says yes, but she has to ask her mom first. He asks if she wants to see Revenge Of The Reptiles. She suggests Crying In The Wind instead. He accepts. As they walk off, Kathleen is excited that Melanie has a date. Melanie kind of blows it off because it's just Yick and they are only friends, she is ready for a man. Melanie has her eyes on Snake and says, that's a man.

The guys notice Melanie likes him. Then they kid him that he is irresitable to little kids. Snake says he kind of likes her. Joey suggests he asks her out so they can skip rope. Liz walks by and Joey tries to talk to her, but she won't talk to him. Wheels asks what did he do to her.

Shane approaches Spike at her locker and tells her his dad still wants to meet. Spike thinks it's a waste of time. Shane asks to please try and talk her mom into it.

Yick tells Arthur she asked Melanie out and she accepted. He asks what movie they would see and is disappointed to find out it is Crying In The Wind.

When class lets out, Joey invites his friends out to play video games. Wheels has to go to tutoring and Snake says he has something else to do. Liz invites Spike to go out with her, but she says she has to go to counseling and help out her mom, but maybe over the weekend. Shane reminds Spike to invite her mom to see his parents. Snake waits for Melanie to approach and Melanie shoos Kathleen off. Snake asks her out to a movie -- Revenge of the Reptiles -- and she agrees to go, forgetting she has a date with Yick. She finds Kathleen waiting outside and tells her about the date and she reminds him about the date she had with Yick. She thinks he won't mind cancelling the date but thinks it's unfair as Yick asked first. Melanie calls Yick and says her parents won't let her go. Kathleen thinks it's a bad idea, but Melanie says it's only a little white lie.

At the beauty parlor, Spike's mom tells her she got a call from Shane's parents inviting them out. She says they kept after Shane to invite her, but she never got that message once and think perhaps the boy was at fault for not communicating. Spike thinks it will be embarassing and she can't make it because she has plans with Liz. Her mom thinks this meeting is a bit more important and she can be with Liz another time.

Shane is at home looking at a brochure from Strathcona Boy's School. He tells his father he doesn't want to go. His father tells him he might like it as his brothers did. His father says maybe it's time he started trying to be like them. His mother thinks it will be good for him to get away where he can focus on his studies. Shane says he wants to be there when the baby comes. His father says the baby is going straight up for adoption and he will never see it. Shane asks what if it doesn't go up for adoption. His parents look concerned and say he has done enough damage already.

At school, when class lets out, Melanie and Kathleen are discussing the date. Kathleen thinks the movie might be too scary, but Melanie is more concerned what to do if Snake tries to kiss her because she doesn't want him to think she is too easy. Yick and Arthur walk by and they say hi. Yick is disappointed that she can't go out with him. Arthur asks Yick if he has any plans now and if he wants to see Revenge of the Reptiles. He hears it's really gory. He accepts.

Joey and Wheels thinks Snake is crazy to take Melanie to see that kind of movie for a date. They kid him again for robbing the cradle and he insists he just likes her and she is only a year younger. He says their just jealous because he has a date and they don't. When Snake walks away, they decide to see a movie -- Revenge of the Reptiles.

Shane talks to Spike about their parents meeting and asks if she nervous. Then he asks if she ever thought about keeping it. Spike scoffs at that notion because she is only a kid and too young to be a mother. He gets after her for pop because it is bad for the baby. She tells him to mind his own business, but he reminds her that it is his business because it is his baby, too. She gets mad and tells him he has no idea what it's like to be pregnant, he has it easy.

Spike goes to her mother's work where they are getting ready for the meeting. Spike admits to her mother that Shane did give her the messages from his parents, but did not tell her. She said she didn't give her the messages because she did not want to meet them because of what they may think of her. Her mom assures her it doesn't matter what other people think. Her mom asks why she was telling her now and Spike says in case it came up it was better if she were mad to get mad at her there instead of at dinner.

Snake and Melanie arrive at the cinema. Joey and Wheels are stalking them. Snake asks where she likes to sit. Melanie says she likes the back and Snake says he likes the front. So she says she likes the front, too. As they get settled in their seats, Wheels and Joey make rude noises and surprise Snake and Melanie who are now uncomfortable with an audience on their date.

At the restaurant, Shane's parents are waiting. Shane's mother is complaining she could have made a nice dinner at home and doesn't see why they had to go there. Spike and her mom approach and the introduce themselves as Steven and Mary McKay and are corrected when they call her Spike and her mom says her name is Christine. Ms. Nelson orders a drink and insists it goes on a separate tab. Mr. Mckay says he is in a profession where he handles these situations all the time and thinks they can come to a reasonable solution to this situation.

At the movies, Melanie spots Yick and Arthur and tries to hide. Yick and Arthur slide into their row and say hi to Snake and Yick notices Melanie. As the movie starts, Yick leaves.

Mr. McKay suggests maybe Christine could go away to a home for unwed mothers. She complains she does not want to go away. He says it is sometimes in the young person's best interrest to get away because kids can be mean. He says he is glad Shane agreed to go away and Shane says he never agreed and that he never listens to him. Mr. McKay says he is not responsible enough to make those decision and proved it by getting her pregnant. Shane insists he is not perfect and made a mistake, but give him a chance and let him raise the baby.

At school, Kathleen asks about the big date, but Melanie was disappointed because they didn't have a lot to talk about. Yick and Arthur walk by and she says hi to them, but he does not respond. Kathleen wonders what that was about and Melanie says she hates herself.

Shane and Spike talk. Shane apologizes for the other night. Spike asks if he really wants to keep the baby. He says he doesn't know and now has to go into counseling. He says his parents are no longer bugging him about going away, but think it would be a good idea. He says it really isn't as easy being the guy as people think.
