A note about TV ratings. A few years ago, V-Chips were designed to help parents keep their kids away from channels that some of the content might be unsuitable. Those without the V-Chips are left to use their own judgement before viewing a show. At the beginning of each show [and on the hour and half hour] a rating is flashed to help you determine if you want to watch the show. [Although in my opinion, this is a lame way to do it. Most people channel surf minutes after the programs begin anyway.]
If you want to figure out what those letters mean, here is the key:
- G - General content for all ages. Safe for the whole family.
- PG - Parental guidance needed. Some material may be unsuitable for children.
- PG-13 - Parental guidance needed. Some material may be unsuitable for pre-teens.
- R - Restricted for adult audiences. May contain explicit violence, nudity and/or profanity. Children should be with an adult when viewing.
- NC-17 - Not for Children under 17 - at all!
- NR - Not yet rated by the MPAA, so be cautious as it may contain adult themes.
- TV-Y - Television show suitable for all children, including the very young.
- TV-Y7 - Television show for older children which may include mild violence/slapstick comedy or childish gross speech.
- TV-G - Television show safe for the whole family with little to no violence or sexual situations, and no strong lanugage.
- TV-PG - Television show has some topics that may be inappropriate for some viewers which may contain violence, sex, strong language, or suggestive dialogue. Children should watch with an adult present.
- TV-14 - Program may contain themes unsuitable for those under 14.
- TV-MA - Program meant for adults which may be completely unsuitable for those under 17.
- AS - Adult situations
- BN - Brief nudity
- GL - Graphic language
- GV - Graphic violence
- L - Language
- MV - Mild violence
- N - Nudity
- R - Rape
- SSC - Strong sexual content
- V - Violence
